Akmeeli – the mighty witch of Lapland

Akmeeli (Johan Musta), one of the most esteemed witches in Lapland, lived by Lake Sompiojärvi in the 1600s.

When Akmeeli fell into a trance he would roam the wilderness as a wolf, bird, fish or a gust of wind. The story tells that Akmeeli did not return from his last trance because his wife had forgotten the words needed to awaken him. She did remember them 30 years later, however, by then Akmeeli had been on his journey for too long. Finally, Akmeeli’s body was buried, and other seers would visit his grave to ask help from his soul.
